I like tiled backgrounds on web pages, honest.
But I always thought it would be fun to have a background that was different every time and composed of different tiles. I had the idea to write a little PHP script using the GD2 library to get some images, randomize the cropping to squares and create an arrangement of tiles that looks different every time... and then post it as the background of my band's myspace page! If you hit this url and refresh a couple of times you'll see the randomizing effect.
Here's what I came up with. It only works with jpg images. You can get them from the web by entering a comma delimited set of URLs or from your file system if you run the script locally.
You can download a zip of the whole thing.
So here's a test I did using web images (of Colin Powell and a bunch of scribble-scrabble):
And here is what I did with some Hubble telescope images located on my file system, much prettier:
Here's what others have done. Very cool!!
So have fun with the script. If anyone happens to make something cool with the demo send it along!
